The Bottleneck, Lawrence, KS
Seattle natives Filth is Eternal began their first night of the Baroness tour in Lawrence, KS, at The Bottleneck. Front person Lis Di Angelo opened the set, kicking ass and taking names with her powerful voice and stage presence. The punk/metal riffs are heavy, and the energy of the band’s aggressive playing style quickly queued a highly active mosh pit front and center during their entire set. It’s always fun finding gems like this band. Hopefully, we see more from them. Check them out live wherever you get the chance.
Black metal/Screamo artist Portrayal of Guilt is the super heavy hitter of the night, lending their growling vocals to metal heads in attendance. I’m not a fan of the growling vocals, but I was hooked on their heavy riffs and catchy drum rhythms. One downside to this set was the lack of lighting. Only a few purple lights backlit the members, so all concertgoers seen were silhouettes of the three band members.
Headliner and Grammy nominee Baroness opened their progressive metal set with “Last Word.” The set included songs from each of the color albums as well as their current album, Stone. The chemistry between guitarist Gina Gleason and John Baizley is so spine-tingly capturing. They complement each other’s playing style and vocal harmonies. Gina has quickly landed herself in my top five all-time favorite live female guitarists. The set closer was “Isak” from the 2007 Red album.
Overall, it was an excellent live show to witness. The staff was stellar, but the lack of lighting took away from the production.
