Despite an approaching storm, PVRIS (pronounced “Paris) kicked off the night with energy that defied their status as the opening band. Starting 15 minutes early, the venue quickly filled up, and the crowd’s anticipation was palpable. The atmosphere was electric as PVRIS began their set. Lead singer Lynn Gunn hit every high note with precision, all while switching out guitars after nearly every song. Her energy was infectious, setting the tone for the night.
The band delivered a diverse set, blending their signature rock sound with older hits, newer tracks, and some funky, melodic elements. There were no shortage of guitar solos, adding to the intensity of the performance. PVRIS played fan favorites like “Goddess” from their EVERGREEN album, top tracks like “Snakes” and “Burn It All Down,” as well as new songs like “Burn the Witch” as the stage was bathed in strobing lights and fog, enhancing the visual experience.
The chemistry between the band members was evident as they vibed out on stage, their heads bobbing in time with the music. Drummer Denny Agosto Vega delivered a powerful drum solo, while bassist Brian MacDonald kept the rhythm tight. The band closed their set with “My House” from their 2014 album, leaving the crowd on their feet, giving PVRIS a well-deserved standing ovation. It was a phenomenal start to the evening, with PVRIS bringing great energy as the opening act.
Smashing Pumpkins were welcomed with a venue packed to the brim with fans eagerly awaiting them. Fans of all ages ventured out to see the legendary band, and as the stage lights dimmed, the strobe lights and fog machine created an atmosphere of suspense and awe.
Opening with “The Everlasting Gaze” from their 2000 album Machina/The Machines of God, setting the tone for an epic performance. The band also treated the audience to covers like U2’s “Zoo Station” and a snippet of “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas. Frontman Billy Corgan added a personal touch, commenting on the hot August weather in Kansas City, humorously referencing the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win.
Smashing Pumpkins brought out their biggest hits, including “Today”, “Tonight, Tonight”, “Disarm”, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” “1979” and “Zero”. The packed house was fully engaged, with fans off to the side and on the grass, soaking in every moment of the show. Vibrant lighting added to the overall entertainment as the band delivered a performance that was both nostalgic and electrifying.
