The Fox Theatre in Hays, KS continues bringing in a variety of music acts, from Country to Hip Hop to Rock of all kinds. On June 17th, they hosted Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, accompanied by local and area acts AnchorWay, Starslinger, and Tree Kitty.
Local Hays Psych Whale Sound Rock trio Tree Kitty opened up, exposing the crowd to their unique sound, energetic and eclectic presence. It would be a good estimate that at least 75% of the audience were hearing them for the first time, and they used their entire 27 minute set, featuring “Comatose” and “Rephase”, to quickly implant on those in attendance. They have positioned themselves as a voice to be heard in the area and across the state, and with luck, some of those here tonight will be out to their show the next time they play in Hays.
The next local act of the evening was Starslinger, the area’s alternative psychedelic space rock wizards took the crowd on an audible journey to the stars and back home. As with Tree Kitty, there’s a good portion of the crowd experiencing the rock trio for the first time, and hopefully it won’t be the last time. Primarily songs from their debut album “Contact!”, the sound of Starslinger really took advantage of the ambiance that a theater like the Fox offers.
Coming from Tulsa, OK, AnchorWay was the penultimate group before the headliners. The pop-punk rock sound of the Oklahoma natives continued the tonal change in sounds from the first two bands, building upon the energy. Promoting their latest EP “Party Some More”, they brought the best from the audience, creating a pit circle in the middle of the Fox’s floor. With any luck, they will find their way back to the area.
Finally, Emo-Rock took the stage with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus exciting the crowd of youths who grew up with their music from the early 00s. The band had the crowd hanging on every word the whole night, belting out classic banger after banger. Their first trip to Hays will hopefully not be their last. Opening the show with “Real World”, continuing thru their catalog with “Am I The Enemy”, “False Pretense”, “Cat & Mouse”, “Guardian Angel”, and finishing up by bringing the house down with a lesser known song called “Face Down”, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus maintained a steady pace throughout the evening, signs of the veteran performers that they are. A fantastically triumphant night of rock music from a band that visibly enthused the entire Fox Theatre, and brought great anticipation for everything to come in the future to the venue.
