Inspired by the likes of Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Fiona Apple, Nick Drake, the Deftones, and everything else inbetween, Toronto’s poolblood, the musical nom-de-plume of Maryam Said, brings their sound to Kansas City’s Howdy (6523 Stadium Dr, KCMO) on Saturday. This tour supports their recently released debut album mole. The album itself is centered on stories of deep and abiding intimacies – romantic and platonic – that run so far below the surface, they become the root of everything that grows above. Said is the rare artist who picks through the layers of the art they absorb and finds takeaways to bring home and use in their own creations, taking lessons learned from the art that has impacted them the most to perfect their craft.
poolblood is a pastiche of genres and styles working in blended harmony, an ethereal spirit of punk rock, swirling and dancing in the air with a collection of gorgeously orchestrated bedroom pop music. Featured on NPR, MTV, Consequence, and more, Saturday’s show is sure to bring the audience a tranquil perspective into the world that poolblood creates, lush and dense and beautiful at one turn, sparse and tender and revelatory in others. It’s certainly not one to miss.
The show will also feature special guests Olivia Markey, and Flora. Doors open at 7pm, Show starts at 8pm. $10-15 (PWYC)
